Clean Lint. Prevent Fires: Clothes Dryer Safety at Home

Neighbors, laundry is one of those chores we tend to do on autopilot. Before you start the next load, give your dryer a quick safety check. Cleaning the lint filter and keeping the exhaust path clear are simple ways to help prevent a fire.

Every load: start with a clean filter

Remove lint from the filter before and after each drying cycle, and put the filter securely back in place. Never run the dryer without it. Check around the drum opening for stray lint, too.

Make this a household habit. Anyone who uses the dryer should know where the filter is and how to clean it.

The filter is only part of the job

A clean lint screen does not replace cleaning the exhaust vent. Lint can collect behind the dryer and inside the duct that carries warm air outdoors.

  • Have the exhaust vent cleaned at least once a year, or more often if clothes begin taking longer than usual to dry. Follow any more frequent schedule in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Check visible ductwork for damage, crushing, or other restrictions. Use metal venting suitable for the dryer and have installation or repairs handled by a qualified professional.
  • Check that the outdoor vent flap opens while the dryer runs. Keep the outlet clear of obstructions, including snow.
  • If your dryer is ventless, follow its specific instructions for filters, condensers, and other maintenance.

Stay home and stay awake

Turn the dryer off before you leave home or go to bed. Plan the last load so you can be there while it runs.

Follow the manufacturer’s loading instructions. Overfilling the drum is not a shortcut to finishing the laundry.

Give the dryer some breathing room

Keep boxes, loose clothing, cleaning products, and other items that can burn away from the dryer. Clean up lint behind and around the appliance according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Leave internal cleaning and servicing to a qualified professional.

Plug the dryer directly into the correct wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord. Have a qualified professional install and service the appliance, including checking gas connections on a gas dryer.

Put a reminder on the calendar

Before your next load, clean the filter and look around the dryer for clutter. Then check when the exhaust vent was last cleaned. If you do not know, arrange a cleaning and set a recurring reminder.

Clean filter. Clear vent. Dryer off before leaving or sleeping. Three habits worth making part of laundry day.
